Zakumi, official mascot of the 2010 World Cup in South AfricaThe official mascot of the 2010 World Cup is Zakumi. He is a Leopard (one of the African "Big Five") with green hair and was born on 16th June 1994. He will turn 16 in 2010 on the day South Africa play their second group match. 16th June is also Youth Day in South Africa. The year of his birth, 1994, marks the birth of democracy in South Africa so Zakumi is part of the 'born-free' generation in South Africa.

The name Zakumi is made up of two parts: "ZA" is the international two letter code for South Africa and "Kumi" is the word for "ten" in many of of South Africa's local languages.
