Africa Zone (5 + 1 places)

After the initial stage, the 3 winners (Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Djibouti) joined the remaining 45 teams. The 48 teams have been drawn into 12 groups of 4 teams. The 12 group winners and best 8 runners-up will progress to the next stage. These 20 teams will be drawn into 5 groups of 4 teams. The 5 group winners will join South Africa in the finals.

 

Although already qualified, South Africa will compete in these groups as the points gained in the final stage will count towards the African Cup of Nations but not the FIFA World Cup.
