    53 teams from Europe will be drawn into 9 groups. 8 groups will have 6 teams, 1 group will have 5 teams. The 9 group winners will be awarded places in the finals while the best 8 runners-up will take part in 4 play-off matches. The 4 play-off winners will also progress to the finals giving Europe 13 representatives in South Africa.
